The Fog
Notice what’s
happening.
Make space to notice how you feel, without turning a hard diabetes moment into a judgement about yourself.
“What am I noticing right now?”
Let me show you the three steps I come back to
when diabetes feels heavy.
A guide from someone living with Type 1 Diabetes
Hello, I’m Richard Martyn
It was a Friday afternoon. I had just finished a Rotary lunch—and I did not feel safe enough to drive.
In the summer of 2017, I had been living with Type 1 Diabetes for nearly 37 years. I was active and community-minded. Being part of a community I loved mattered to me.
But that afternoon, my blood sugar was rising. I felt dizzy and unstable. I did not feel safe enough to drive.
Diabetes was beginning to affect more than my blood sugar. It was affecting my energy, my emotions, my relationships, and my ability to participate in the community I loved.
“All I wanted was to feel in control, feel like myself again, and not feel so alone.”
That experience is part of why I created Better Life Diabetic: to share what I have learned and help others feel less alone in the hard moments.

No. The guide shares lived experience and reflection prompts. It does not replace your diabetes care team. Work with your healthcare provider before making changes to insulin, medication, food, or exercise.
We talk about where you are in your diabetes journey, what feels difficult, and what you’d like support with. If working together looks helpful, Richard will explain what that could involve.
